FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAMS
Family Support Worker
The first job of the worker is to establish a working relationship with the family based on trust, sharing and openness between the worker and family and even extended family members.  The worker helps them to understand the importance of proper assessment and what is involved in the diagnosis process.  In other words, they help them find their voice so they are able to become empowered to solve these problems for themselves.  This is not a short process and could take years to show real lasting results.
Following the diagnostic team meeting the family support worker ensures follow-up by all those involved, i.e., the parent or guardian, to make sure they understand the parent medical summary and recommendations; members of the diagnostic team, to ensure evaluation testing is completed; or others in the community providing services to the family (ex. School).

School Based Support Worker
In order to ensure that no child falls through the cracks Eastern Door has a school based worker who works directly with the school and individual children.  The school based support worker works with teachers, counselors and resource workers to help them understand each child’s strength and educational needs.  They take special care to make sure the child has the supports they need to be able to reach their full potential and that no child is left behind.
Details of this program can be obtained from contacting Easters Door where pamphlets are available with details about who is eligible to apply for this assistance and what services are provided.

PREVENTION SERVICES
   The reason for the Parent Child Assistance Program (PCAP) program is:

  • To prevent future births of alcohol and drug affected children.
  • To assure children are in safe and stable homes;
  • To help mothers build and maintain healthy independent family lives; and
  • To improve the collaboration between families and service providers.

In providing this support to mothers the support worker works in a way so the parent learns how to gradually do these things for themselves over the period of three years at the most that the program is available to them.
Details of this program can be obtained from contacting Easters Door where pamphlets are available with details about who can apply for this assistance and what services are provided.

ASSESSMENT & DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

What exactly are the reasons for assessing and diagnosing someone?

  • To prevent secondary disabilities and reduce further incidence of FASD by providing supports to affected individuals and their families.
  • Communicate with the parent(s) or gaurdian to see that the diagnosis is understood and they are aware of their options for treatment.

Details of this program can be obtained from contacting Easters Door where pamphlets are available with details about who is eligible to apply for this assistance and what services are provided.
